National Education Policy

The National Education Policy 2020 is a comprehensive framework for the development of education in India. It was approved by the Indian government in July 2020 and replaces the previous National Policy on Education, which was formulated in 1986 and revised in 1992.

The new policy aims to transform the Indian education system by making it more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, and globally competitive. It seeks to address the challenges faced by the education sector, such as low enrolment rates, poor quality of education, lack of access to higher education, and inadequate teacher training. The key features of the National Education Policy 2020 include:

Early Childhood Care and Education:

The policy emphasizes the importance of early childhood education and aims to provide universal access to high-quality early childhood education for all children between the ages of three and six.

School Education:

The policy proposes a new 5+3+3+4 structure for school education, which comprises 12 years of schooling. The new structure will replace the current 10+2 structure and will include three years of pre-primary education, five years of primary education, three years of upper primary education, and four years of secondary education.

Multidisciplinary Education:

The policy encourages multidisciplinary education and allows students to choose their own courses from a wide range of disciplines. It also seeks to promote vocational education and skill development.

Higher Education:

The policy aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education from 26.3% (2018) to 50% by 2035. It also proposes to set up a single regulatory body for all higher education institutions, including universities, colleges, and technical institutions.

Teacher Education:

The policy proposes a four-year integrated B.Ed. degree program for teacher education. It also seeks to provide continuous professional development opportunities for teachers to keep them updated with the latest teaching practices.

Technology in Education:

The policy encourages the use of technology in education and seeks to promote online and digital learning. It also proposes the creation of a National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) to facilitate the use of technology in education.

Research and Innovation:

The policy proposes to increase investment in research and development in the education sector. It also seeks to establish a National Research Foundation (NRF) to fund research in various disciplines.

Overall, the National Education Policy 2020 seeks to transform the Indian education system by making it more inclusive, equitable, and accessible. It aims to provide high-quality education to all students, regardless of their background or socio-economic status, and prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century.
